Morondava is a coastal town on the west coast of Madagascar, where the Morondava river meets the Mozambique Channel, and the main town of the Menabe region. It is best known as the gateway to one of the most photographed sights in all of Madagascar, the Avenue of the Baobabs, a majestic line of giant baobab trees on a dirt road just outside the town, especially beautiful at sunrise and sunset. Morondava is a relaxed, sandy town of the Sakalava people, for whom the baobabs are sacred, and it is also the base for trips to the wildlife-rich Kirindy forest and, further north, the dramatic limestone pinnacles of the Tsingy de Bemaraha. Morondava is reached by flights from the capital, Antananarivo, into its airport, and by long roads across the island. The climate is hot and tropical, with a distinct wet season and a long dry season.
