Mizan Teferi is a town in the southwest of Ethiopia, in the forested highlands of the country's coffee-growing heartland, the capital of the Bench Sheko zone. It sits in a green, hilly landscape of one of the wetter and more fertile parts of Ethiopia, an area of dense forest, coffee farms and diverse peoples, well off the main tourist routes. The surrounding region is important for wild and cultivated coffee, and lies near areas of protected forest and the lands of southwestern Ethiopian communities with distinctive cultures. Mizan Teferi is a modest regional centre rather than a tourist destination, of interest as a gateway to this remote, green corner of the country. It is reached by domestic flights to a nearby airport and by long roads from Addis Ababa and Jimma. The climate is warm and fairly wet, with a long rainy season and mild temperatures thanks to the altitude.
