Gorakhpur is a city in the north-eastern part of Uttar Pradesh, India, near the Nepal border - and GOP is the code for its airport, which many travellers search for when planning a visit. The city is best known as the home of the Gorakhnath Temple (Gorakhnath Math), the great seat of the Nath yogi tradition after which the city is named, a major pilgrimage centre set in extensive grounds. Gorakhpur is also an important gateway: it is close to Kushinagar, one of the holiest Buddhist sites, where the Buddha attained parinirvana, and it is a common jumping-off point for the Nepal border crossing at Sonauli and onward travel to Lumbini, the Buddha's birthplace. A busy railway city on the fertile Terai plains, it is a practical base for the region's religious and cross-border travel. The cooler months, roughly October to March, are the most comfortable.
