Doany is a remote inland locality in the Sava region of north-eastern Madagascar, set in the rugged, forested country of the far north-east, well away from the island's usual travel routes. It lies in a landscape of hills, rainforest and rivers on the edge of one of Madagascar's most biodiverse regions, not far in geographic terms from the great protected areas of the north-east such as the Marojejy and Anjanaharibe-Sud massifs, though access across this broken terrain is difficult. This is deep rural Madagascar - a zone of small villages, subsistence farming and vanilla-growing country - rather than a developed destination, reached only by long and demanding journeys. Travellers who venture into the wider Sava region come mainly for its extraordinary rainforest national parks and vanilla plantations. The drier months are more practical for the region's challenging travel.
