ZDR is a code associated with Chateau-d'Oex, a mountain village in the Pays-d'Enhaut region of the canton of Vaud in the Swiss Alps. Although styled as an airport code, it refers to the village's railway station, a stop on the scenic GoldenPass line between Montreux on Lake Geneva and the Bernese Oberland. Chateau-d'Oex is a traditional, sunny alpine resort of chalets and green pastures, quieter than the big-name Swiss resorts. It is famous above all for hot-air ballooning: its sheltered valley and reliable winter conditions make it a leading ballooning centre, and it hosts a well-known international balloon festival each January. The village also offers skiing, hiking, paragliding and mountain scenery, and lies near the resort of Gstaad. It is reached by the GoldenPass railway and by mountain road. The climate is alpine, with snowy winters and mild, green summers.
