Biel/Bienne is a city in the west of Switzerland, in the canton of Bern, set on the northeastern shore of Lake Biel at the foot of the Jura mountains. It is the largest officially bilingual city in the country, where German and French are spoken side by side, which is why it carries two names: Biel in German and Bienne in French. Above all, Biel/Bienne is the heart of the Swiss watchmaking industry, home to some of the most famous names in watches, and it is often called the capital of watchmaking. Beyond its industry, it is a pleasant lakeside city, a gateway to the beautiful Three Lakes region and to the wooded hills of the Jura, where the watchmaking tradition began. Biel/Bienne is reached easily by train and road, on the main lines of western Switzerland. The climate is temperate, with warm summers and cool, sometimes snowy winters.
