Verdal is a municipality in Trondelag county in central Norway, at the head of the Trondheimsfjord, northeast of the city of Trondheim. Its great claim to fame is Stiklestad, the site of the Battle of Stiklestad in 1030, where King Olav Haraldsson was killed; he was later canonised as Saint Olav, and the battle became a turning point in the Christianisation of Norway. Today Stiklestad is a major national cultural centre, with a museum, a historic church and an open-air theatre where the Saint Olav Drama is staged each summer as part of a large festival. Beyond this heritage, Verdal is a district of farmland, forest and mountains running up toward the Swedish border, with the Inndalen valley and hiking country inland. Verdal is reached by road and rail on the routes north of Trondheim. The climate is cool, with mild summers and cold, snowy winters.
