Steinkjer is a town in central Norway, at the head of the Trondheimsfjord, in the region of Trondelag, north of the city of Trondheim. It is the administrative centre of its district, set where the fjord meets green farming country, rivers and forested hills, in a landscape of central Norwegian countryside. Steinkjer is known as a gateway to the surrounding region, with salmon rivers, hiking and, nearby, some of Norway's notable prehistoric rock carvings at Bardal and elsewhere. The town itself was largely rebuilt after the Second World War and serves as a hub for the farming and forestry district around it. Steinkjer is reached by road and by the railway that runs north from Trondheim along the fjord, and it makes a base for exploring inland Trondelag and the routes further north. The climate is cool and temperate, with mild summers and cold, snowy winters.
