Ustaoset is a small mountain village in southern Norway, set high on the edge of the Hardangervidda plateau at around 990 metres above sea level, in the county of Buskerud. It lies on the famous Bergen Line, the scenic railway between Oslo and Bergen, which makes it an easy jumping-off point for the mountains despite its tiny size. Ustaoset is above all a quiet outdoor and cabin destination: in winter there is excellent cross-country skiing across the uplands, and in summer hiking, fishing and cycling into the Hardangervidda, the largest mountain plateau in northern Europe and a national park home to wild reindeer. The landscape is one of bare fells, lakes and huge skies rather than dramatic fjords. Ustaoset is reached most easily by train on the Bergen Line, or by the mountain road that runs nearby. The climate is alpine, with long, snowy winters and short, cool summers.
