Flam is a small village at the head of the Aurlandsfjord, an arm of the great Sognefjord in western Norway, and one of the most popular fjord destinations in the country. Despite its tiny size, it is famous worldwide for the Flam Railway (Flamsbana), one of the steepest standard-gauge railways in the world, which climbs a spectacular route from the fjord up to the mountain station of Myrdal past waterfalls and sheer valleys. Flam is also a gateway to the Naeroyfjord, a narrow, dramatic UNESCO World Heritage fjord reached by scenic boat cruises, and a hub of the classic Norway in a Nutshell travel route combining train, boat and bus. Surrounded by steep mountains and waterfalls, it is a base for fjord cruises, cycling the Rallarvegen, hiking and cruise-ship calls. The main season runs May to September; summer offers long daylight and the fullest transport schedules.
