UKY is a code associated with Kyoto, the ancient former imperial capital of Japan, one of the country's most beautiful and historic cities, in the Kansai region of central Japan. Kyoto has no major airport of its own: it is served by the airports of nearby Osaka, chiefly Kansai International and Osaka Itami, and by the fast Shinkansen trains that stop at Kyoto Station. For more than a thousand years, from 794 until 1869, Kyoto was the capital and the seat of the emperor, and it remains the cultural heart of Japan, famous for its more than two thousand temples and shrines. Among its treasures are the golden pavilion of Kinkaku-ji, the vermilion torii gates of Fushimi Inari, the hillside temple of Kiyomizu-dera and the old geisha district of Gion. Kyoto is reached through Osaka's airports and by Shinkansen. The climate is temperate, with hot, humid summers and cool winters.
