Trincomalee is a port city on the northeast coast of Sri Lanka, set around one of the finest natural deep-water harbours in the world. It has a rich, layered history and today draws visitors above all for its beaches and clear seas. Just north of the town lie the golden sands of Uppuveli and Nilaveli, and offshore is Pigeon Island National Park, a marine reserve with coral reefs excellent for snorkelling and diving. On a rocky headland within Fort Frederick stands the Koneswaram temple, a Hindu shrine above the sea. The waters off Trincomalee are also known for whale watching, with blue whales and sperm whales passing in season, while inland lie the Kanniya hot springs. Trincomalee is reached by road and rail from Colombo and the rest of the island, with a small domestic airport nearby. The best time to visit is broadly from May to September, when the east coast is driest.
