St. Moritz is a world-famous alpine resort in the Engadin valley of the canton of Graubunden, in the mountains of southeast Switzerland. Set beside a lake at around 1,800 metres, ringed by high peaks, it is one of the most glamorous and historic winter-sports resorts in the world, a byword for luxury that has twice hosted the Winter Olympics and is known for its sunny climate, its skiing, and events like polo and horse racing on the frozen lake. In summer it is a base for superb hiking, mountaineering and lakes amid the dramatic Engadin scenery. The nearest small airport is at Samedan nearby, in the Engadin, but most visitors arrive via Zurich, roughly three and a half hours away by road or the scenic railway, or via airports in Italy. The famous Glacier Express and Bernina Express trains serve the area. The climate is alpine, sunny and cold in winter, mild in summer.
