SRE is the airport code for Juana Azurduy de Padilla International Airport, serving Sucre, the constitutional capital of Bolivia, in the highlands of the south-central part of the country. Sucre is one of South America's most beautiful colonial cities, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known as the White City for its whitewashed churches and mansions, with a mild climate at around 2,800 metres. It is the historic heart of Bolivia, where independence was declared in 1825, and its centre is full of Spanish-colonial architecture, universities, museums and palm-lined plazas. Nearby are the dinosaur footprints at Cal Orcko and the Sunday market town of Tarabuco, famous for its weavings. Sucre is reached by flights into its airport, which sits outside the city, and by road across the Andes. The climate is spring-like much of the year, mild and dry, thanks to the altitude.
