The nearest international airport to Potosi, Bolivia is Alcantari International Airport (SRE) outside Sucre, about 150 km away - roughly a 2.5 to 3 hour drive through the highlands. Potosi's own airfield, Capitan Nicolas Rojas (POI), sees only limited domestic use, so most travellers route through Sucre, or through El Alto International (LPB) above La Paz when arriving on long-haul connections. The journey rewards the effort: Potosi is a UNESCO World Heritage city that once bankrolled the Spanish Empire from the silver veins of Cerro Rico, and its colonial core - the Casa Nacional de la Moneda above all - still shows it. At around 4,090 metres, this is one of the world's highest cities: plan a gentle first day and acclimatise before anything strenuous.
