Sorowako, also spelled Soroako, is a town in the highlands of South Sulawesi in eastern Indonesia, in the East Luwu district, built around one of the country's major nickel-mining operations. It sits on the shore of Lake Matano, a strikingly deep and clear ancient lake, one of the deepest in the world, whose isolated waters are home to unique fish and other species found nowhere else. The town itself is largely a planned company settlement serving the mine, but the lake and the surrounding green hills give the area real natural appeal, with clear water for swimming and quiet scenery. This is a remote, industrial corner of Sulawesi rather than an established tourist route. Sorowako is reached by long road journeys across Sulawesi and by limited flights to nearby airfields. The climate is warm and tropical, with wetter and drier periods through the year.
