Getting there typically means a short domestic flight from La Paz, which crosses from high Andean altitude down to lowland jungle in under an hour, since the alternative overland route runs many hours along a winding mountain road; flight schedules here can be irregular and weather-dependent, so travelers should build slack into connecting plans. Once in Rurrenabaque, tour operators handle onward transport into the pampas or Madidi by boat or vehicle, and independent exploration of the protected areas without a guide is neither practical nor advisable.
