St. Gallen is a city in northeastern Switzerland, the largest in the eastern part of the country, set in a high valley between Lake Constance and the hills of the Appenzell region. It is famous above all for its Abbey of St. Gall, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, whose spectacular rococo Abbey Library is one of the oldest and most beautiful monastic libraries in the world, holding priceless medieval manuscripts. The old town around it is full of painted oriel windows, and the city has a long heritage in fine textiles and embroidery. St. Gallen makes a good base for the nearby Appenzell countryside, Lake Constance and the Santis mountain. St. Gallen has no major airport of its own and is reached mainly by train, with fast connections from Zurich and its airport. The climate is temperate, with warm summers and cold, sometimes snowy winters.
