Manokwari is a coastal city at the northern tip of the Bird's Head Peninsula in West Papua, the far eastern reaches of Indonesia, spread around Doreri Bay beneath the Arfak Mountains. It is the provincial capital and a gateway to one of the wildest corners of the country. Manokwari is known for excellent diving, including well-preserved World War II wrecks in the bay, such as sunken aircraft and the Japanese freighter Shinwa Maru, amid healthy coral reefs. Inland, the Arfak Mountains rise to nearly 3,000 metres and are famous among birdwatchers for birds of paradise and among naturalists for some of the world's largest butterflies. During the war the city was a Japanese stronghold before falling to Allied forces in 1944. Manokwari is reached by domestic flights within Indonesia, often via Sorong or other Papuan hubs. The climate is hot and humid year-round.
