Loei is a province and town in the northeast of Thailand, in the Isan region near the Laos border, known for its cool climate, rolling hills and mountain scenery unlike the rest of the country. Its highlight is Phu Kradueng National Park, a high plateau over 1,300 metres up, reached by a demanding hike and rewarded with pine forests, cliffs and seasonal waterfalls. Along the Mekong River lies Chiang Khan, a charming old town of wooden shophouses and a popular riverside walking street. Loei is also famous for the Phi Ta Khon, or ghost festival, held each year in Dan Sai, when locals wear colourful masks and costumes. The town of Loei is reached by road and bus from Bangkok and other cities, and has a small airport with domestic flights. The cool season from around November to February is the most pleasant time to visit.
