Le Locle is a small town in the Canton of Neuchatel, high in the Swiss Jura mountains near the French border and close to its larger neighbour La Chaux-de-Fonds. It is one of the birthplaces of the Swiss watch industry, with watchmaking roots reaching back to the 1600s, and famous names such as Tissot, Zenith and Ulysse Nardin trace their origins here. In 2009 the twin watchmaking towns of La Chaux-de-Fonds and Le Locle were together inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List for their distinctive town planning, laid out in parallel strips to suit the watch trade after fires in the early 1800s. Visitors come for watch museums, the historic townscape and the surrounding Jura scenery. Le Locle has no airport of its own; travelers usually fly into Geneva, Zurich or Basel and continue by train. The climate is cool and alpine, with cold, snowy winters.
