KTJ is the airport code for Kichwa Tembo Airstrip, one of the small bush airstrips that serve the Maasai Mara, the most famous game reserve in Kenya. The airstrip lies in the northwest of the Mara, below the Oloololo Escarpment, on the edge of the Mara Triangle, and is used by safari camps in this part of the reserve, reached by short flights from Nairobi. The Maasai Mara is a vast expanse of open savannah, rich in wildlife, and is world-renowned for its lions, elephants and other big game, and above all for the Great Migration, when huge herds of wildebeest and zebra cross the plains and the Mara river. This is one of the great safari destinations on earth. Kichwa Tembo is reached by light aircraft on short flights from Nairobi, into its airstrip, followed by a short drive to camp. The climate is mild and pleasant, at altitude, with wet and drier seasons.
