The Kerio Valley is a dramatic stretch of Kenya's Great Rift Valley, running for about 80 kilometres below the Elgeyo Escarpment in Elgeyo-Marakwet County. From the escarpment edge near the town of Iten, the land drops well over a thousand metres to the valley floor, creating one of the most striking landscapes in the country. Reliable thermal currents rising off the escarpment have made the valley the leading paragliding destination in Kenya, drawing pilots from around the world, with Kerio View a well-known base for the sport. Down in the valley, the Rimoi National Reserve shelters elephants, buffalo and birdlife, near Lake Kamnarok and the Cherangani and Tugen Hills. Iten itself is famous worldwide as a high-altitude home for distance runners. The cooler months from late November to February are considered best for flying and clear views.
