JOG is the airport code for Adisutjipto Airport in Yogyakarta, the cultural heart of the Indonesian island of Java, and one of the country's most-loved destinations. Adisutjipto was for many years Yogyakarta's international gateway, but it has now been largely replaced for scheduled flights by the newer Yogyakarta International Airport, in Kulon Progo to the west. Yogyakarta itself, often shortened to Jogja, is a special region still led by a sultan, famous for its royal palace, or kraton, its traditional arts, batik and music, and its easy-going atmosphere. Above all it is the gateway to two of Asia's greatest monuments, the Buddhist temple of Borobudur and the Hindu temples of Prambanan, both World Heritage sites nearby. Yogyakarta is reached mainly through Yogyakarta International Airport, and by train and road across Java. The climate is tropical, with a wet and a dry season.
