Ilulissat is reached by air - most travelers connect through a Greenlandic hub such as Kangerlussuaq or the capital Nuuk, then take a short domestic flight north, while Air Greenland also runs a seasonal direct route from Copenhagen in winter. Set on Greenland's west coast about 350 km north of the Arctic Circle, it is the country's third-largest town and the gateway to the Ilulissat Icefjord, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Here the Sermeq Kujalleq glacier, one of the most productive on Earth, calves huge icebergs that drift down a 55 km fjord into Disko Bay. Summer brings the midnight sun, iceberg boat tours and whale watching; winter brings dog-sledding and the northern lights. A major airport expansion expected in 2026 should add more direct international flights.
