Dar es Salaam is the largest city and economic heart of Tanzania, a sprawling Indian Ocean port on the East African coast and the country's main international gateway, served by Julius Nyerere International Airport. Though no longer the official capital, it remains the commercial and cultural centre - a hot, humid, energetic coastal city of markets, mosques and churches, a natural harbour, and a mix of Swahili, Arab, Indian and colonial influences. For most travellers Dar es Salaam is the springboard for the region: ferries and flights connect it to the spice island of Zanzibar just offshore, while it is also a starting point for the southern safari circuit and the coast. The city itself offers the Kariakoo market, the National Museum, waterfront life and nearby beaches at Coco and Kipepeo. The drier months are the most comfortable for travel.
