Geita is a town in north-western Tanzania, the capital of the Geita Region, in the gold-rich country south of Lake Victoria. It is best known as a mining centre - the site of the Geita Gold Mine, one of the largest gold mines in Tanzania and Africa - and the town has grown rapidly around the industry. Set in the greenbelt of hills and farmland between the goldfields and the great lake, it is a working commercial town rather than a tourist destination, though its position gives access to the wider Lake Victoria region, with the lakeshore, fishing communities and the city of Mwanza within reach to the east. Travellers passing through are usually en route across north-western Tanzania. The climate is warm year-round with rains around March to May and again toward year-end; the drier months are the easier time for overland travel in the region.
