Cilacap is a port city on the south coast of Central Java, Indonesia, facing the Indian Ocean - the largest city on this stretch of Java's southern shore and an important industrial centre, home to one of the country's biggest oil refineries and a major deep-water harbour. Just offshore lies the forested island of Nusakambangan, well known across Indonesia as the site of high-security prisons, while the city itself has the Teluk Penyu beach, a historic Dutch fort (Benteng Pendem), and access to the Segara Anakan lagoon and mangroves to the west. It is more a working port-and-industrial city than a resort, but its coastal setting, island backdrop and role as a gateway along the south coast give it a distinct character. The tropical climate has a wet season roughly October to April; note that Java's south coast has strong currents and is not always safe for swimming.
