Karpathos (airport code AOK) is a rugged, elongated Greek island in the southern Dodecanese, lying between Crete and Rhodes and served by Karpathos Island National Airport near the southern village of Afiartis. The second-largest of the Dodecanese, it is far less developed than its famous neighbours, prized for wild mountain scenery, a string of excellent beaches, and the remarkably preserved traditional culture of Olymbos, a village high in the north where old dress, dialect and customs endure. The south around Afiartis is a world-class windsurfing spot thanks to reliable strong winds, while the coasts offer everything from organised resort beaches near Pigadia, the main town, to remote coves reached on foot or by boat. Summer is the season, roughly May to October, with the meltemi winds strongest in July and August.
