Travel insurance for Longyearbyen and Svalbard is not just advisable, it is now required, and the cover you need is unusual enough that an ordinary holiday policy is unlikely to be enough. Svalbard is a remote Arctic archipelago governed by Norway, and as its tourism has grown, so have the rules around being properly insured for its specific risks.
Insurance is now mandatory
As of 1 January 2026, Norway's field-safety regulations for Svalbard require insurance for tourism and organised field activities across the archipelago, and that insurance must cover search and rescue operations and patient transport, regardless of whether anyone was at fault. Separately, travellers heading outside the central management area near Longyearbyen must notify the Governor of Svalbard and hold search-and-rescue cover. This is a real, enforced requirement, not a formality, so confirm your policy meets it before you go.
Why standard policies fall short
Many ordinary travel policies exclude polar regions, or exclude Svalbard by name, and standard cover usually does not include search and rescue at all. Svalbard needs a policy that explicitly covers Arctic travel, wilderness medical evacuation, transport to mainland Norway, and search and rescue. Do not assume a normal European policy applies here: read the wording, and if it is silent on polar travel or search and rescue, treat that as a gap to fill rather than a risk to take.
Medical care and the Arctic reality
Longyearbyen has only a small hospital that handles emergencies and stabilisation. Anything beyond that means transport to mainland Norway, and a helicopter evacuation from a remote glacier or field site can run to six figures. The environment adds its own risks: you should not leave the settlements without a guide, because of the genuine danger of polar-bear encounters. Subscription-style plans such as SafetyWing suit long trips, but you must confirm they specifically cover Svalbard and search and rescue, as many do not. Arrange the right cover before you travel, keep the policy and assistance details with you, and make sure it satisfies the archipelago's insurance rules.
