YQX is the airport code for Gander International Airport, in the town of Gander in central Newfoundland, Canada. Though modest in size today, Gander has a remarkable place in aviation history: from the 1930s it was a vital refuelling stop for transatlantic flights, once one of the busiest airports in the world, when planes could not yet cross the ocean nonstop. It is most famous now for the events of 11 September 2001, when North American airspace was closed and dozens of diverted airliners landed at Gander, whose small community took in thousands of stranded passengers, a story later told in the musical Come From Away. The town has an aviation museum and memorials to this history. Gander sits amid the forests and lakes of central Newfoundland. It is reached by its airport and by the Trans-Canada Highway. The climate is cool and often foggy, with mild summers and cold, snowy winters.
