XPT is a code associated with Preston, a city in Lancashire in the northwest of England. Although styled as an airport code, it refers to Preston's railway station, a major junction on the West Coast Main Line between London, the north of England and Scotland. Preston is one of England's newest cities, granted city status in 2002, and is an old market and industrial centre on the River Ribble. It is known for the Harris Museum and its landmark building, its Victorian parks such as Avenham and Miller, and the Preston Guild, a historic celebration held only once every twenty years. The city is a gateway to the Lancashire countryside, the Forest of Bowland, the Ribble Valley and the coast at Blackpool. Preston is reached easily by train and by the M6 motorway. The climate is mild and often wet, typical of northwest England.
