VPE is the airport code for Ondjiva Pereira Airport, serving Ondjiva, also known as Ngiva, the capital of the Cunene province in the far south of Angola. Ondjiva lies on the dry plains of southern Angola, only about forty kilometres from the border with Namibia, and is the main town and administrative centre of this hot, flat border region near the Cunene river. Once the seat of the kings of the Kwanyama people, and long an important frontier town, Ondjiva was heavily damaged during Angola's long civil war and has since been rebuilt. Today it is a busy regional hub and a gateway between Angola and Namibia. Ondjiva is reached by air into its airport, with flights from the capital, Luanda, and by road, above all across the nearby Namibian border. The climate is hot and dry, with a short rainy season and very high summer temperatures.
