UGC is the airport code for Urgench Airport, in the far west of Uzbekistan, in Central Asia. Urgench is a modern regional city on the Amu Darya river, but for most travelers its great importance is as the gateway to nearby Khiva, one of the jewels of the Silk Road. Khiva, a short drive away, is a spectacularly preserved ancient walled city whose old town, the Itchan Kala, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, a maze of mud-brick walls, minarets, madrasas and palaces that feels like a living museum of Central Asian history. Urgench itself is the practical base and transport hub for the region, in the historic land of Khorezm. Urgench is reached by flights into its airport, from Tashkent and other cities, and by road and rail across Uzbekistan. The climate is dry and continental, with very hot summers and cold winters.
