UBP is the airport code for Ubon Ratchathani International Airport, serving the city and province of Ubon Ratchathani in the far northeast of Thailand, in the Isan region near the borders with Laos and Cambodia. Ubon is a large, easygoing regional city, a good base for exploring a culturally rich, less-touristed corner of the country. Its most famous event is the Candle Festival each July, marking the start of Buddhist Lent, when huge carved wax sculptures are paraded through the streets. Nearby lie the Mekong River, the cliff-top prehistoric rock paintings of Pha Taem National Park overlooking the river, and the Emerald Triangle where the three countries meet. The area is known for Isan food and silk. Ubon is reached by flights from Bangkok to its airport and by train and road across the northeast. The climate is tropical, with a cooler, drier season around the end of the year.
