Tidjikja is a remote oasis town in central Mauritania, the capital of the Tagant region, set on the edge of the Sahara. Founded in the late 17th century, it is one of Mauritania's historic caravan towns, with an old quarter of stone-and-clay houses, mosques and a scatter of ancient manuscripts kept by local families. The town is best known for its extensive date-palm groves along a seasonal watercourse, and for the guetna, the summer date harvest that is an important local season. Around it stretches the Tagant plateau, a landscape of rocky escarpments, canyons and desert that sees few visitors. This is a frontier destination, remote and served by basic infrastructure. Tidjikja is reached by long desert roads and tracks from the capital, Nouakchott, several hundred kilometres to the west, and by a small airstrip. The climate is hot and very dry, typical of the Sahara.
