STG is the airport code for St George Airport, on St George Island, one of the remote Pribilof Islands, far out in the Bering Sea off the coast of Alaska. The Pribilofs are treeless, windswept islands, hundreds of kilometres from the mainland, and are among the great wildlife places of the world. Each summer, more than a million northern fur seals gather on the shores of the Pribilofs to breed, the largest gathering of sea mammals anywhere on earth, and the cliffs of St George are home to one of the largest seabird colonies in the northern hemisphere, with millions of murres, puffins and auklets. The island has a small Aleut community, descendants of people brought here long ago. St George is reached by small aircraft into its airport, weather permitting, so any visit needs careful planning. The climate is cold, wet and famously foggy, cool even in summer.
