SNO is the airport code for Sakon Nakhon, a city and province in the upper northeast of Thailand, in the region known as Isan, near the Phu Phan mountains. It is a low-key, culturally rich destination centred on the large Nong Han Lake, the biggest natural lake in northeastern Thailand and an important wetland. The city's landmark is Wat Phra That Choeng Chum, a revered temple with a tall white-and-gold chedi built over Khmer foundations and said to enshrine the footprints of past Buddhas. The wider province offers Khmer-era sanctuaries, forested hills, indigo-dyed textiles and a famous illuminated Christmas Star festival reflecting a local Christian community. Sakon Nakhon is reached by domestic flights from Bangkok to its airport and by road and bus across Isan. The cool, dry season from about November to February is the most pleasant time to visit.
