RRG is the airport code for Sir Gaetan Duval Airport, the gateway to Rodrigues, a small volcanic island in the Indian Ocean, about 560 kilometres northeast of the main island of Mauritius, to which it belongs. Rodrigues is a quiet, unspoilt island, ringed by a huge coral lagoon dotted with tiny islets, and is often called the authentic jewel of the Indian Ocean, far removed from the busier resorts of Mauritius. Its capital and only real town is Port Mathurin, a small harbour town, and the island is known for its Creole culture, its fishing and its relaxed pace of life, its hills, beaches and reefs. Rodrigues is reached by short flights of about ninety minutes from Mauritius into its airport, and by an occasional cargo and passenger ship. The climate is warm and tropical, cooled by the trade winds, with a warmer, wetter summer and a milder, drier winter.
