PHS is the airport code for Phitsanulok Airport, serving Phitsanulok, a historic city in the lower north of Thailand, set on the banks of the Nan river. It is best known as the gateway to the great UNESCO World Heritage ruins of Sukhothai, the first capital of Thailand, about an hour to the west, and as a lively transport hub between the northern mountains and the central plains. Phitsanulok itself is an old and revered city, home to the temple of Wat Phra Si Rattana Mahathat, known locally as Wat Yai, which houses the Phra Buddha Chinnarat, considered by many to be the most beautiful Buddha image in all of Thailand and a major place of pilgrimage. Phitsanulok is reached by flights from Bangkok into its airport, and by train and road on the main routes north. The climate is tropical, with a hot season, a rainy season and a cooler, drier season.
