Obock is a small port town in the north of Djibouti, a tiny country on the Horn of Africa, standing on the northern shore of the Gulf of Tadjoura where it opens out into the Gulf of Aden. It has a notable history: in the 1880s Obock was the first capital of the French colony in the region, before the administration was moved across the gulf to the better-sheltered harbour of Djibouti city in the 1890s. Today it is a quiet, remote town, a gateway to the empty deserts, volcanic hills and long coastline of northern Djibouti, in a region where the Afar people live. The warm waters of the gulf are known for whale sharks, which gather here in season. Obock is reached by road and by boat across the gulf from Djibouti city. The climate is very hot and arid for most of the year.
