Nouakchott is the capital and largest city of Mauritania, set on the Atlantic coast of West Africa at the point where the Sahara desert meets the ocean. It is one of the largest cities in the Sahara, a low, sandy capital built almost from scratch since the late 1950s on a flat coastal plain, where desert dunes reach almost to the sea. The most famous sight is the Port de Peche, the lively fishing port, where each afternoon hundreds of brightly painted wooden pirogues land their catch on the beach in a great bustle of nets and colour. Nouakchott is a gateway to a striking desert-and-ocean country, more a working capital than a resort, with markets, mosques and the vast emptiness of the Sahara close at hand. Nouakchott is reached by air through Nouakchott-Oumtounsy International Airport and by desert roads. The climate is hot and very dry, tempered a little on the coast by the Atlantic.
