Marathon is a small town on the north shore of Lake Superior in northwestern Ontario, Canada, on the Trans-Canada Highway between Thunder Bay and Sault Ste. Marie. Set among the rugged forests, cliffs and cold, clear waters of the Superior coast, it grew as a pulp-and-paper town and lies near the Hemlo gold-mining district. For visitors, its main draw is as a gateway to Pukaskwa National Park, which protects a wild stretch of Lake Superior shoreline with dramatic coastal hiking, rivers and boreal forest, and to nearby Neys Provincial Park. The area is known for outdoor recreation, wildlife and big-lake scenery rather than city sights. Marathon is reached by road along the Trans-Canada Highway or via a small regional airport. Summers are short and pleasant; winters are long, snowy and cold.
