Liepaya, more commonly spelled Liepaja, is a port city on the Baltic Sea coast of western Latvia and the country's third-largest city. Known as the city where the wind is born, it combines a long white-sand beach and seaside park with a distinctive industrial and military past. Its most unusual district is Karosta, a former Tsarist and Soviet naval base with a fortress-like Orthodox cathedral and a notorious former military prison now open to visitors. Liepaja also has a lively cultural scene, a strong rock-music heritage and the modern Great Amber concert hall on the waterfront. The old centre has wooden houses, churches and a busy market. Liepaja is reached by road and rail from the capital Riga, a few hours to the east, and has a small airport. Summers are mild and popular for the beach; winters are cold and windy.
