Historically an important harbour, going back to ancient times, it is the main seaport of Syria and the centre of its coastal region, set between the sea and the green mountains of the coast, in an area of beaches and farmland known for tobacco and citrus. However, Syria has been devastated by years of war, and the security and humanitarian situation across the country remains very serious; it is essential to check your government's current advice, which is likely to warn strongly against all travel. The nearby coast and mountains, and ancient sites such as Ugarit, once drew visitors in peacetime. Latakia is reached by its port, by road, and by a nearby airport, though access is heavily affected by the conflict. The climate is Mediterranean, with hot summers and mild, wetter winters.
