Koping is a town in the county of Vastmanland in central Sweden, at the western end of Lake Malaren, the great lake that stretches east toward Stockholm. An old market town whose name means merchant place, Koping was mentioned as far back as the Middle Ages and grew as a lake port and trading centre, later becoming an industrial town with engineering and other manufacturing. Set where the countryside of central Sweden meets the lake, it has a pleasant harbour and waterfront, and lies within easy reach of the other towns of the Malaren region and of Stockholm. It makes a quiet base in a green, lake-and-forest landscape. Koping is reached by road and rail across central Sweden, and by boat on Lake Malaren, with the airports of the region and Stockholm not far away. The climate is temperate, with mild summers and cold, often snowy winters.
