Kitwe is one of the largest cities in Zambia and a major hub of the Copperbelt, the mining region in the country's north that has driven its economy for a century. It is a commercial and industrial centre rather than a tourist town, with busy markets, shopping areas and a role as a gateway to the surrounding mining communities and to the border with the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Nearby lie the other Copperbelt towns such as Ndola and Chingola, home to one of the world's largest open-pit copper mines. Kitwe is reached by road from the Copperbelt's Simon Mwansa Kapwepwe International Airport at Ndola, and by Zambia's main north road from Lusaka. The climate has a warm rainy season from November to April and a cooler, dry season the rest of the year.
