Fergana is a city in the east of Uzbekistan, in Central Asia, the main city of the beautiful and fertile Fergana valley, one of the great oases of the old Silk Road. The valley, shared with neighbouring Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan, is sometimes called the garden of Central Asia, a green land of orchards and cotton fields ringed by mountains, long famous for its crafts. Fergana itself is a pleasant, leafy city of tree-lined avenues, a good base for exploring the valley and its ancient towns, above all Margilan, the historic centre of Uzbek silk, where the famous ikat cloth is still woven, the pottery town of Rishtan, and the old khanate capital of Kokand. Fergana is reached by air into its airport and by road over the mountains from Tashkent. The climate is continental, with hot summers and cold winters, milder in the sheltered valley.
