DAK is the airport code for the airport at Dakhla, the Dakhla Oasis, one of the great oases of the Western Desert of Egypt, in the New Valley governorate, far to the west of the Nile valley. Dakhla is a lush and beautiful oasis, a long band of green palm groves, gardens and fields set among the sands and pink-tinged cliffs of the desert, watered by many natural springs, some of them hot. It is dotted with old villages and remarkable historic sites, chief among them the medieval Islamic town of Al-Qasr, a maze of mud-brick houses built on the remains of a Roman fort, and there are ancient tombs and temples nearby. Dakhla is one of the most rewarding of the desert oases to visit, deeply peaceful and rich in history. It is reached by its airport and by the long desert roads that link the oases and the Nile. The climate is hot and extremely dry, with warm days and cool desert nights.
