Cowell is a small coastal town on the eastern Eyre Peninsula of South Australia, on the shores of Franklin Harbour, a nearly landlocked bay opening onto Spencer Gulf. It is known for two distinctive things - oysters and jade: the sheltered waters of Franklin Harbour support a notable oyster-farming industry, and the district holds one of the largest deposits of nephrite jade in the world, which has been quarried and worked locally. A relaxed fishing and farming town on the Lincoln Highway, Cowell offers calm-water fishing and boating, fresh local seafood, and a quiet coastal base for exploring the Eyre Peninsula. It sits on the route between Whyalla and Port Lincoln, making it a natural stop on a peninsula road trip. The Mediterranean-style climate brings warm, dry summers and mild winters, with the warmer months best for the water though also the busiest.
